Emergency Service Walk in Aid of Blue Light Mental Health

Over 100 emergency service workers are walking 20 miles of the Cleveland Way this weekend to raise awareness of mental health.

Officers and staff from Cleveland Police, Cleveland Fire Brigade, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, Staithes Coastguard, Cleveland Mountain Rescue and Redcar Addaction will cover the route from Whitby to Saltburn.

Walkers will carry the Blue Light Mental Health Torch as it is passed on a relay around the country. The relay has been developed by Our Blue Light, to engage staff and the public in events to get people talking about mental health.

The aim of the walk is to help reduce the ongoing stigma and educate people about the ways in which to signpost people to mental health services.

Inspector Phil Spencer from Cleveland Police said: “I’m proud that we have so many people joining us in this walk. Emergency service workers deal with extremely traumatic incidents and stressful situations and we can’t let mental health go unnoticed.

“We’re working closely with Mind to develop our bluelight champion network and have a number of other programmes in place to support our wellbeing.

We want to give back to Mind and would encourage people to visit our justgiving page to help raise money for this worthwhile charity.”

The walk is being supported by Tesco and Skelton Coaches who will be providing refreshment and transport.
