Preventative and proactive approach leads to reduction in house burglaries.House burglaries across much of the force area fell by 16% this September when compared with September last year - a reduction of 42 crimes. And longer term there’s been a 15% reduction on the previous 12 months which equates to 468 fewer victims. The drop’s being attributed to the force making sure preventative and proactive measures are in place, with each policing district making use of specialist officers and staff including crime analysts, intelligence officers and neighbourhood officers who work with local partner agencies and our communities to identify suspects.
Daily partnership meetings with input from our colleagues at Local Authorities also mean we can identify any emerging crime trends or hot-spot areas early on and take swift action.
Redcar & Cleveland saw just 48 burglaries reported across the district in September, 24% fewer than the same month last year. And the district recorded 90 fewer crimes across the year to September when compared with the previous year.
Superintendent Emily Harrison, force lead for burglary said: “Obviously we welcome these reductions, but as a force we will never be complacent and we accept there’s always more work to do. “Burglary can have a huge impact on victims; the thought that someone has been in their home, looking around and stealing their belongings can leave victims fearful and often traumatised. “We’ll continue to use all available resources available to try to prevent burglaries and to identify suspects where they do occur. “Now that we’re at the time of year when the clocks change, I’d urge all our residents to help us to help them by taking simple steps to protect their homes and property. “We’d ask you to ensure you lock doors and windows, even if you’re at home. Make it difficult for opportunist thieves to get into your house. “If you’re leaving your property empty, consider using timer switches on lamps and lights to make it look as though someone is in and maybe think about installing security lighting on the outside of your home.” You can find more crime prevention information on our website: Protecting your home from crime | Crime prevention | Cleveland Police You can report crime at any time online via our website or by phoning 101.
